What makes a resume template ATS-friendly?

An applicant tracking system reads your file before a person does. It extracts your text, tries to work out which part is your job title, which is your employer and which are your dates, and stores the result as structured data. A template is ATS-friendly when that extraction is unambiguous.

In practice that means one column, standard headings like Experience and Education, real bullet characters, and no content trapped in tables, text boxes, headers, footers or images. Two columns are the most common failure: many parsers read straight across the page, interleaving your skills list into the middle of your job history.
